EPIC DOMESTIC is an art project by Bobby Baker: a campaign to create a Domestic Revolutionary Party fit for the twenty first century.
It is inspired by the radical and subversive art and activism of the dada movement in the early 20th Century. The work is also influenced by propaganda posters, prints and photographs from the Soviet Union at around the same time.
EPIC DOMESTIC aims to celebrate and draw much-needed attention to the importance and value of domestic labour and care. Baker says: ‘EPIC DOMESTIC seeks to create a new world where highly skilled domestic experts, like myself, take to the streets wearing exquisite, strange yet utilitarian outfits and are finally rewarded for our “Grossly Undervalued Domestic Product.” (Sandi Toksvig).’
The first phase of EPIC DOMESTIC took place in Madrid in 2019, during Baker’s retrospective exhibition, Tarros de Chutney. For this show, Baker was commissioned to produce a large site-specific mural. She chose to use this as an opportunity to announce the start of her revolution and also produced a limited run of 1000 specially-created propaganda posters that visitors took away for free.
Baker is now working on the next in the series of posters, supported by an artist’s grant from Unlimited, and is continuing to research and develop the project.
