Daily Life Ltd is proud to present this exhibition of work by thirty-five artists, illuminating our understanding of the experience of mental distress.
Bobby Baker’s pioneering Stratford-based arts and mental health organisation, Daily Life Ltd, has teamed up with Outside In and Bethlem Gallery to showcase extraordinary work by artists with personal experience of mental health issues. The exhibition is made up of artworks selected through an open call process.
The exhibition title is a reference to Groucho Marx’ great line: ‘Blessed are the cracked, for they shall let in the light.’
Artist and Artistic Director of Daily Life Ltd Bobby Baker says: “When I had serious mental health problems I was mostly judged and underestimated, but when people see the autobiographical drawings I made during that time it helps change the way they think about mental health. Experiencing mental distress and difficult times are part of the human condition and can form a rich basis for reflection and awareness. Artists like us, with unique experiences, can create work that enlightens and delights people.”
We present these works in the hopes of brightening up the dark winter months with wit, beauty, insight and creativity.
OUTSIDE IN Outside In, founded by Pallant House Gallery, Chichester, in 2006, provides a platform for artists who see themselves as facing barriers to the art world due to health, disability, social circumstance or isolation. The goal of the project is to create a fairer art world which rejects traditional values and institutional judgments about whose work can and should be displayed.
BETHLEM GALLERY The Bethlem Gallery provides a professional platform for artists who are current or former patients of South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. Exhibitions and events are programmed throughout the year presenting a wide range of media and contemporary practice. We campaign for access to the arts in healthcare environments, and engage audiences in learning and debate on the subject of mental health. The Bethlem Gallery is funded by the Maudsley Charity. bethlemgallery.com
